Dog Obedience Training

The excitement of getting your new puppy has diminished and now it’s time to think about some serious dog obedience training for your puppy. It’s important they learnDog Training proper behavior both in the home and out and behavior that is acceptable around other people and other animals. Who needs that brisk walk in the park when Fido catches glimpse of a foxy white Poodle out for a stroll?! Not you? Then it’s time for dog obedience training. It’s definitely better to get the training going while they are still in the puppy stage, then you’re not having to teach an old dog new tricks. This can be an exhaustive process, but a rewarding one in the end.

The dog obedience training you embark on should take genetic characteristics and temperament into account. All breeds are different and will be a tad more excitable than others. So before deciding on what dog obedience training is best for your dog, learn all you can about the breed and what personalities and traits you will be dealing with. This ensures proper methods and techniques are used which will lead to much more success in the training.

Some dogs have a need to protect humans. Rottweilers, bull dogs and German Shepherds fit this bill as well as being great guard dogs. Some dogs such as pointers, gun dogs and Labradors are your best buddy on a hunting trip so tend to be very energetic. Consider characteristics in all dog breeds before embarking on your dog obedience puppy training course.

Accept the fact that dog obedience training is going to cut into your social life. You will need a good two weeks before you start to see results in your puppy’s behavior. Don’t expect to show off your well behaved puppy to your significant other first week you have the dog. They will be less than impressed. Be patient and put the time in to dog obedience puppy training and you will not be disappointed with the results. As with attention spans of two year old kids, dogs’ attention spans wane after a time so try to keep the time spent to a few minutes a day. This is much more effective in the end then hours and hours of schooling for your dog.

Start with something as simple as ‘sit’ or ‘stay’ or ‘heel’. These simple commands are picked up fairly quickly by most breeds and make a good starting point. You can have your dog jumping through hoops later; right now focus on the daily commands that will make your life easier. Once the basic dog obedience training is mastered, then you start teaching the fun tricks like ‘shake a paw’ or becoming a good guard dog.
