5 Tips for Puppy Potty Training
For many families that have never owned a pet before, training a puppy
can be frustrating. Not only do they have to make sure to set aside some
time to look after
their new pet, but they also have to train it to do
certain things. One of the most difficult things to teach is puppy potty
training.
One of the main reasons families focus on training puppy to go potty is
because they don't want to have to clean up messes around the house
everyday. Nobody wants to and because of that, puppy potty training can be
difficult for all of those that are involved. Owners must remember, puppies
are just babies and they don't know what you want until you let them know.

The following are a few strategies you can use:
1. Designate a potty place; not only will it make the
training process easier, but it will also teach a pet where to go potty.
While training their pet, owners must make sure to take the puppy to the
same area each time they need to do their business. If done outside, owners
should only stay outside for ten minutes at a time before going back in.
Playtime should only be allowed after the puppy has gone potty.
2. Use a crate; believe it or not, using a crate will make
puppy potty training a lot easier. If an owner is unable to watch their pet,
they should put it in a crate. To dogs, a crate is like a den so they won't
want to soil where they sleep. Owners should use the same command when
sending the puppy into the crate and always offer a reward while doing the
training. A puppy may cry when they are first placed inside of the crate,
but owners must remember that giving them free reign will allow them to go
potty anywhere inside the house. However, a puppy should not be left inside
of the crate for long periods of time as it won't get any attention.
3. Use a leash; by using a leash, owners can make sure to
keep an eye on their pet during the puppy potty training process. This can
be difficult for owners who are trying to get other tasks done around the
house but it can keep a pet close so they don't sneak off to go potty.
4. Reward success; owners must remember that teaching their
pet is all about getting a desired behavior. When a puppy receives a reward
or praise, they will start to associate going potty as a good thing.
5. Practice; practice makes perfect and like anything else,
teaching a pet certain things takes a lot of practice. By practicing
different techniques, owners and their pets will get used to the training
and see it as an everyday activity.
Puppy potty training requires a lot of patience and practice. By learning
and carrying out different techniques, owners can make sure their pet
understands where to go potty. Even though it may seem like a small thing to
learn, it's something all pets need to develop a habit for in order to be a
trained adult.
