How to Stop Dog Aggression

Dog Aggression is definitely the most serious problem any dog owner could be faced with. What most people don’t realize is that an aggressive dog can be cured withoutDog Training being put to sleep.

Some dogs are aggressive towards other dogs but love people while other dogs are aggressive towards people. Wherever your dog’s aggression is aimed, the problem must be taken seriously. What most dog owners fail to realize is that most forms of aggression stems from fear and insecurity. The bright side to all of this is that like all behavioral problems,
aggressiveness can be cured.

As the owner of an aggressive dog, you must not let yourself become discouraged or
disheartened. Like any other sort of dog training, training your dog to be gentle takes
patience and perseverance. The first step is to engage in high intensity obedience training. Let’s face it; your dog absolutely must obey at all times.

If you do not consistently correct your dog when it disobeys, it will see you as weak and therefore not its leader. If you are not leader, then it becomes obvious to the dog that someone has to take charge and it is in their instinct to do so. If you, as a dog owner do not take the role of leader, your dog will never learn what is acceptable and what is not. Even if your dog is not aggressive to begin with, if you do not present yourself to the dog as a strong leader, they may become aggressive out of pure instinct.

It is also important for the owner of an aggressive dog to take a certain amount of control of the dog’s environment. For example; it doesn’t make much sense for the owner of a dog whom is aggressive towards children to take the dog to a school playground. That is just a bad situation waiting to happen.

Unfortunately for a lot of dogs with aggression towards other dogs, their owners think that they just need more exposure to dogs and so they take them to busy dog parks in the hopes that being around lots of other dogs will help cure them of the aggression. This simply is not the case. As I have stated earlier, most dog aggression stems from fear, this is why one must gain a certain amount of control of the dog’s environment.

Instead of thrusting your dog into the midst of a large pack, it is better to slowly
introduce the dog to the fearful situation. This can easily be achieved by instead of going into the middle of the dog park, simply stay at the outskirts, so the aggressive dog can observe the other dogs and slowly, progressively, bring the aggressive dog into contact with other dogs. Another technique is to make an arrangement with the owner of a calm well behaved dog to slowly introduce the aggressive dog.

After a few sessions you should notice that your aggressive dog will lose the aggression towards the calm dog as it realizes that it in fact poses no threat. Eventually your furry companion should lose all of its dog aggression.
