Sometimes dogs bark because they are trying to tell you something. So
naturally you should look to see what they are barking about. If there does
not seem to be a problem, your dog could be barking just to get attention.
If that is the case wait until your dog has stopped barking before you give
it attention or you will just be encouraging your dog to bark more.
Dogs also may bark because they are bored. Make sure your dog gets plenty of
exercise either by going for walks or running around the yard. Your dog will
likely tire itself out and not want to waste the energy barking.
Also, make sure your dog has a good chew toys. Chewing relieves stress for
dogs and occupies your dog’s time. Chew toys distract your dog from barking
because it can not bark when it has a toy in its mouth.

Make sure your dog knows the “Quiet” command. When your dog keeps barking
say “Quiet” in a stern voice. When your dog stops barking give it praise. If
your dog does not respond to the quiet command, try making a noise shaker.
Put some coins in an empty can and tape or hold it shut and shake the can.
Dogs do not like that sound and will usually stop barking when they hear it.
A more commonly used method is to fill a spray bottle with water and squirt
your dog and firmly say “no” when your dog will not stop barking. Remember
to aim for your dog’s body rather than its face and make sure not to use a
bottle that once had harmful chemicals in it.
There are also training collars available such as the Gentle Leader. This
collar looks similar to the halters horses wear and when your dog starts
barking, you pull the lead to gently press your dog’s mouth closed for a few
seconds. You can tell your dog “no” in a stern voice when you do this,
however after using the gentle leader a few times your dog will understand
and stop barking.
Try anyone of these strategies but remember to be consistent. If you have
been trying the same strategy for a period of time and you have not seen any
improvement, it is time to try a new strategy. Every dog is different and
you may need to try a few before you know how to stop dog barking for your
individual dog.
