How to Get Your Dog to Stop Whining

If you’re tired of dog whining and are trying to get your dog to stop whining, the following may contain some valuable tips and information for you. A reader writing in forDog Training advice has a 15-16 month old German shorthaired Pointer named Copper. Fairly well trained after using a pinch collar and an electronic collar for the training, Copper is in need of some help to stop her constant whining. The owners had tried various techniques in the past to stop this whining but this was short lived. Copper is back in the saddle and being a difficult student in the whining category. Sound familiar?

The response to this common dilemma with dog owners and anyone with a quest to get your dog to stop whining contains invaluable solutions to this annoying behavior. Apparently this behavior is genetically motivated, being more common in some breeds than in others. And if the leash or electronic collar isn’t cutting it, then it’s time for plan B.

Here are some suggestions to get your dog to stop whining:

1. Recognize this anxiety-based behavior.  Most dogs can’t help but get excited to see you, that game of fetch about to happen or the treat you’re trying to hide behind your back. What ensues is whining that would send you on your way for headache medicine. Accepting that this is just your dog becoming anxious about the situation is your first step.

2. Pay attention.  Don’t release your dog too soon from the down-stay position as this is only rewarding the dog for their whining. Have them hold the down-stay for at least five seconds before they are released. This repeated five second hold will help reinforce to the dog that whining is not an acceptable behavior.

3. Teach your dog that silence is indeed golden.  Reward your dog often for silence with no barking or whining. The dog will learn that if they are silent and not whining, that they’re just one step closer to getting that ball, that treat or a resounding ‘Good Dog!’ from the owner. It is your duty as a dog owner to teach respectable behavior and reward accordingly.

4. NEVER give in.  Stick to your guns and if your dog continues to whine, just keep that treat in your back pocket. You will never get your dog to stop whining if you cave in for the sake of keeping the peace.

You may never completely get the whine out of the dog, however with correct techniques, consistency and patience you can stop dog whining and …at least when it counts.
