How to Stop Puppy Barking

To put an end to all the excessive barking, start dog obedience training early so that your puppy will listen to you. You must teach your puppy to bark and stop barking on command so it learns when it is and is not okay to bark.

Most puppies bark to get attention because they are scared of being by alone. Puppies are used to being around their mother and siblings so it is natural for a puppy to feel scared when it leaves its mother for the first time. If your puppy feels lonely when you are not around, do not make a big deal when you do leave. Dogs have been known to develop separation anxiety because they spend too much time with their owners or their owners are too dramatic about saying goodbye. Make sure to be as low key as possible when you leave or come home.

When your puppy does bark to get attention, do not give him attention while it is whining or barking. Wait until the barking stops, even if it is only for a second or two, to go and pet it or give it attention. If you give it attention as soon as it barks, your puppy will think that constantly barking the only way it can get attention and you will not solve your puppy barking problem.

Even something as simple as putting change in a can and shaking it every time your dog barks. This method stops the barking without you giving the dog attention. Some puppies do not know the difference between positive and negative attention, so this method works better than shouting at it. Once your dog stops barking, you can give it attention or take it for a walk.

Some trainers will say to wrap your hand around your dog’s snout, not too tightly of course and firmly say “no” or “enough”. Your dog can not bark with its mouth shut. It will try to back up or move its head away so hold its collar so that it can’t. Do not be too rough or forceful because you do not want to hurt your dog, you want to hold its snout gently until it stops fighting and quiets down. This shows that your dog has accepted you have authority over it. This is an important lesson to learn as it will help to prevent many dog behavior problems from arising in the future.

Sometimes puppies bark because there are people nearby that your puppy is unfamiliar with. Make sure to take your puppy to public places so that it is exposed to many new people and situations. Walks through the park or to a friend’s house should do the trick. It is important that your puppy gets used to new sounds and people but take it slow so that you don’t frighten your puppy or cause it any anxiety.
