Stop Puppy Biting
When puppies are little, biting might appear cute, especially if it does
not hurt, but it is crucial that you stop puppy biting now. Small puppies
will soon grow into adult dogs.
When your dog is big enough to cause pain,
suddenly biting is not so cute anymore. Unless you want to be sued because
your dog has injured someone, take the proper steps now to stop puppy
biting.
Puppies should be a few months old before they are taken from their mother.
Believe it or not your puppy can learn proper behavior from its mother.
Usually puppies are taken from their mother when they are six weeks old,
however, six weeks is not enough time for the mother enough time to teach
her puppies how to behave.
If your puppy is too young, you can still let the puppy interact with other
dogs; if you do not have other dogs you could always borrow a friend or
relative’s. Your new puppy will learn how to interact with humans and pets
when it copies the behavior of older dogs.

When your puppy does bite you, firmly say 'no!' and remove your body part
from the puppy. Always say 'no' immediately so your puppy will not be
confused. Do not hit your dog or act cruelly toward it because that will not
stop the puppy from biting but it may make your dog even more aggressive.
Also, make sure allow your puppy to have bones or other chew toys, hopefully
this will help the puppy understand what is and is not acceptable to chew.
Most dogs bite to protect themselves or to keep others away from their toys
and food. It is best to stay away from your dog while it is eating and make
sure to instruct your family members to stay away from the dog’s
possessions. Watch for signs of aggression from your dog. When your dog’s
ears are laid back or it begins growing, those are signs that it wants you
to stay back. Make sure your family understands to leave the dog alone when
they see these behaviors. Young children, however, should never be left
alone with a puppy.
There are products available to prevent dog biting. One product is called
bitter apple and you can apply it to exposed skin. Bitter apple makes your
skin taste unpleasant, your dog will think twice about biting something that
tastes bad. Sometimes, however, your dog may associate your hand with the
bad taste and not want to be petted. Carefully consider your options before
trying this strategy.
The easiest way to prevent your puppy from growing into an aggressive or
vicious adult dog is to start training it now and stop puppy biting.
